I am often reminded of something worth reflecting upon which was mentioned by Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat in his lectures.
A group of slaves sat discussing their worth in the eyes of their master. Depending on each slave’s abilities they were guessing on the price their master would put upon them. Referring to a particular slave they decided that he would get the highest price as he was the best looking, the strongest and the most hardworking among them.
This slave remained quiet however upon the insistence of the others he finally said that it was pointless their setting a price on each other. Yes, if the master himself was to set the highest price on him, then that would be worth feeling happy about.
Similarly, when admired or praised for some virtue, it is admiration and praise from other slaves of Allah ta’ala. What counts is when Allah ta’ala becomes pleased with us!
